The Melbourne Athenaeum will be closed on Tuesday November 7 for the Melbourne Cup public holiday.

We will be open regular hours on Monday November 6 and Wednesday November 8.

Our Cultural Program

Much of our city’s standing as Australia’s cultural capital can be traced back to the Melbourne Athenaeum and the role it played in the early promotion and development of music, visual arts, literature and theatre.

The Melbourne Athenaeum’s writer-in-residence program provides tangible support to an established playwright with financial support and a creative and inspirational place to work.

Members enjoy a public event, such as a rehearsed play reading, as the culmination of this annual program.
